The optical long ‘ period ’ of LMC X - 3

چکیده

We have studied the long term variability of LMC X-3 in optical lightcurves spanning six years, in order to search for optical signatures which could confirm/refute the suggestion that the ‘modulation’ is the result of accretion rate variability rather than accretion disc precession. We find that there is no stable period in the optical lightcurves, that the optical and X-ray lightcurves are correlated, with an X-ray lag and that there is no modulation in the optical colours. We argue that these effects agree with the variable mass accretion rate model proposed by Wilms et al. (2001).

We report the detection of changes in the long term intensity variations in two X-ray binaries Cyg X-2 and LMC X-3. In this work, we have used the long term light curves obtained with the All Sky Monitors (ASM) of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), GINGA, ARIEL 5 and VELA 5B and scanning modulation collimator of HEAO 1. It is found that in the light curves of both the sources, obtained wit...

The black-hole binary LMC X–3 is known to be variable on time scales of days to years. We investigate X-ray and ultraviolet variability in the system as a function of the 1.7 day binary phase using a 6.4 day observation with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) from December 1998. An abrupt 14% flux decrease, lasting nearly an entire orbit, is followed by a return to previous flux levels. Thi...

We present RXTE observations of LMC X–2 obtained during a five-day interval in 1997 December, during which the source was radiating at a mean intensity near the Eddington limit, and strongly variable on timescales of seconds to hours. The shapes of the X-ray color-color and hardness-intensity diagrams during the observations, the presence of VLFN and HFN in the power spectra, and the high intri...

Of all known persistent stellar-mass black hole candidates, only LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 consistently show spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal component. We present results from long (170 ksec) Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 made in 1996 December. The spectra can be described by a multicolor disk blackbody plus an additional high-energy power-law. E...

Optical identification of the LMC supersoft source RX J0527.8-6954 from MACHO Project photometry

We identify the likely optical counterpart to the LMC supersoft X-ray source RX J0527.8-6954, and hence recover HV2554. This identification is based on an analysis of ∼ 4 years of optical photometry obtained serendipitously via the MACHO project. We see a steady fading of the star of ∼ 0.5 mag over the duration of the observations. Evidence is also presented for an orbital modulation of ∼ 0.05 ...
